2007 Salmon Farming Industry Compliance Report Misses Major Concerns

CAAR member group, the Living Oceans Society, today criticized the provincial government report on salmon farm compliance as missing the point by failing to address the industry’s fundamental problems. Inadequate regulations governing B.C.’s salmon farming industry means that salmon farms’ impact on the environment is not taken into account.

Farmed Fish Escapes Preventable: Closed Containment Needed Now

Georgia Strait Alliance and Homalco First Nation expressed their dismay and anger today about the Canada Day escape of 30,000 Atlantic Salmon from the Fredrick Arm Marine Harvest farm in the northern Georgia Strait.

Conservation Groups Support Immediate Action To Protect Wild Salmon And Promote Closed Containment

Conservation groups responded today with cautious support for a proposal aimed at providing emergency, interim protection for some wild salmon stocks in the Broughton Archipelago. The groups noted that this action underscores the seriousness of the sea lice situation and supports the need for long term solutions like closed containment systems.

CAAR is presenting a resolution at the Cermaq AGM asking for full compliance with Norwegian state policies on sustainability for state corporations.The Norwegian government is the largest shareholder of Cermaq (Mainstream) a major salmon farm operator in BC.

 

BC Government Blocks Sea Lice Information

The BC government is wrongly claiming that commercial secrecy comes before the public’s right to know about the extent of sea lice infestations in salmon farms, according to a submission to the Information Commissioner just filed by Ecojustice (formerly Sierra Legal Defence Fund) on behalf of the T. Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation.
