Norwegian-owned aquaculture giant, Cermaq, is the second largest of the salmon farming companies operating in BC. Operating under it's subsidary - Mainstream Canada - Cermaq’s BC operations have come under repeated scrutiny for sea lice problems, escapes and marine mammal kills.
This May, the Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform, BC business owners, and First Nations spoke out to inform Cermaq's shareholders of their company's practices. Cermaq's largest shareholder is the Norwegian government, holding 43.5% of all shares.
CAAR has tabled a resolution demanding that Cermaq undertake a review of operations to identify areas of performance that do not meet the environmental and social justice criteria required of state owned corporations.
