North Shore News Focuses on Sustainable Seafood

Picking through the long list of statistics that point us one way or another can be confusing. Here on the West Coast, where seafood (especially salmon) is not just a staple of our diet but also deeply entrenched in our culture and economy, we are increasingly faced with not only the question of what is healthy but also what is ethical because of depleting species.

When it comes to salmon, choices are a little trickier because it's a complicated fishery, says Wareham. "There's so much stock that are depressed, or they come in different year cycles, one year it'll be up, another year it'll be down."

So the program has built an "annual salmon calculator" that works out which salmon is best for the year. That information is also available on the SeaChoice website at www.seachoice.org, where people can also download a small card that tells the eatery how lovely the meal was, but asks that it use sustainable seafood.
